What is Newsies?
Newsies is a 1992 American musical drama film directed by Kenny Ortega and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is based on the Newsboy Strike of 1899 in New York City, which was sparked by the newspaper publishers’ announcement of a price hike for newspaper distribution to newsboys. A crew of newsboys, led by main character Jack Kelly, takes on the establishment and calls for change. The film features songs with music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman, and was choreographed by Ortega.
The Characters
The Characters:
Newsies- The main characters of the show, a group of newsboys who sell newspapers on the streets of New York City. They are young, tough, and determined to fight for what they believe in.
Jack Kelly- The leader of the newsies, a street-smart kid from the wrong side of the tracks. He’s charming, rebellious, and always looking out for his friends.
Davey Jacobs- Jack’s best friend and right-hand man, a smart and levelheaded kid who knows how to talk his way out of (and into) anything.
Crutchie- One of the younger newsies, he’s loyal to Jack and is always ready for a fight. He uses a crutch due to a deformity in his leg.
The Plot
The Newsies are a group of newsboys in New York City who sell newspaper on the streets. They have to pay for their newspapers from the publishers, and then they sell them to the public for a profit. One day, the publishers raise the price of newspapers, and the Newsies go on strike. They are joined by other newspaper sellers, and they try to get people to buy their newspapers from them instead of from the publishers. The Newsies also try to get people to stop buying newspapers from the publishers.

The Movie
